Surround speakers for hi-fi home theatre? Audiophiles and speaker enthusiasts please.?

I bought a set of hifi speakers with the centre speaker (B&W), main L&R speakers (JBL), rears (Kenwood diopole) and subw (B&W). I hadn’t placed the Kenwood rears properly and rarely hear the sound effects. I am thinking of getting another set. I finally bought two stands to place the rear speakers but the ones I have are two heavy to be supported by the stands, the max is 2lbs. My Kenwoods are 2.3lbs and look too big to sit asthetically on the stands I purchased. Initially, I thought I could get any eg. Sony speakers but I found that today’s market is all speakers one set with amplifier. The sydney hifi market is almost dead and all retailers are going for the all-in-one home theatre. I bought my set 3 years ago. Is it possible for me to buy a small mini compo and use those speakers as my back surrounds? I can check if they will accept 8 ohms with 89 db noise levels. Do you think this is better? I am only wanting to pay no more than A$200 for a pair. Will it work?

Well you can. But it wont sound right.

To produce the surround sound experience accurately, you need to have all speakers to have a same tonal balance and dynamic capabilities. And most of the time–that means you need the same brand/model for all the 5 speakers.

Even if you use same brand but different range/class you will hear the imbalance between those speakers.

Anyway, if you insist to do your way, just make sure it has the same wattage and sensitivity.

And one more thing, go get some DVD calibration disc. Like Avia "Guide to home theater" or Video Essentials. You’ll learn many good think from it. It’s a worthy investment.

Good luck.

The sound from my hi fi is quiet when my (loud) mp3 player is plugged into the aux input. Why?

It is a Sony mp3 player which sounds loud on my earphones, but neither of my hi-fi’s produces much sound when the player is plugged into the aux inputs. When playing CDs, radio etc the hi-fi’s can really punch out the volume, but even when the mp3’s volume is at max, the level is low. Do I need a pre-amplifier, or is there a problem with impedences or the output voltage of the mp3 player being wrong for the aux input of my hi-fi’s ?

I have had a similar problem connecting my computer to my Hi-Fi: it turned out that it was a dodgy cable at the end of the day, so that’s worth checking out.

Generally speaking, the amplification happens within the Hi-Fis themselves, so a preamp *shouldn’t* be necessary. No guarantees, though.

Outputs from a 3.5mm stereo mini jack are all universally compatible, so the impedances and voltages should all be roughly the same for any player, ruling those out of consideration.

Good luck.

Old Hi-Fi speakers for PA?

By: admin
Published: August 25th, 2010

Hi, I’m playing in a band and we have all our gear except a PA system.
We have a Peavey PA120 amplifier. It has 4 inputs and 60 watts output per channel. Its a good little amp.

We cant afford PA speakers so what we did is run off to goodwill and bought a set of old 80’s style Hi-Fi speakers for $20 (they are rated like 80 watts each).

Will this work?
is there any risk of ruining the amplifier?

One last thing. One of the speakers woofers has the foam surround missing… Can we still use it?

You won’t damage the amplifier as long as the impedance (ohms) of the speakers is not lower than the rating of the amp.

You are likely to be disappointed with the results.

Speakers made for home stereo use are not terribly efficient. They simply won’t sound very loud with the limited amount of power you have. It’s one of the tradeoffs made to get decent frequency response out of a small cabinet.

The speaker with the missing surround will sound awful once you feed it more than a few watts because the edges of the cone are unsupported leaving only the spider to hold the voice coil in alignment with the magnet. Those foam surrounds have a tendancy to disintegrate after a number of years.

It’s a top of the line model reciever and it has
pre out-power in/tape monitor +several thousand dollars in vintage speakers. I don’t know where to pull the signal from the computer w/o the computer doing the job I want the amp to do? could somebody please help me out here?
(Idon’t mind rigging the one of them {or both} to accomidate) I prefer not to need anything, I just
want to modify irregardless of the physical changes such as -cut here solder there etc.

There are cables that are stereo ‘headphone" jack to stereo rca jack. I have a couple of them for hooking up my computer to the stereo and vice versa… You should be able to find them at any store with an electronics section.

Best speakers for my Hi-Fi is?

I just got a new Hi Fi.

Pioneer PD-D6 SACD player
Pioneer A-A6 Amplifier

I am using old AE Aegis 1 speakers with Mit MITERMINATOR 6 speaker cables and UK Connections interconnectors.

I feel that the speakers are the weak link.

What speakers would fit the Amp and CD players best?
I listen to Jazz like Ella and Diana Krall.

I like to have a flat respond speaker and bookself or small floorstanders.

Best it has no port as have small room with bare walls and placement will be near to side and back walls(necessery for my Yamaha YSP 800)

BOSE always works wonders.

Samsung Hi Fi has no sound output from euther earphone jack or speaker connectors?

Samsung hifi all working correctly except sound output. Tryed speakers on another systen an they are working fine. I wonder if ther is a problem with the amplifier and if there is what would be involved.
I do not want to replace the system as it is a bundled system that matches the tv and dv/vcr and fits stand perfectly. Model MAXS520

Push the button for either "A" speakers or "B" speakers. Sometimes when they are pushed it cuts off to the outputs. Check surround mode.

What Hi-fi system and speakers should I get?

My old hitachi cd/radio player (piece of crap) is getting old and I have decided to buy a new sound system for my bedroom. I have my eyes set on the Denon D-M37DAB micro hi-fi or the Onkyo CS-515DAB micro hi-fi. These both have the features I want – CD Player, DAB/FM radio, input for ipod, and input for my imac (playing music from itunes). Which should i buy?, and or do you know of any other micro systems, hifi’s or amplifiers which have similar features and are in a similar price range £200 – £300. I am planning to buy separate speakers because the ones that come with micro hifi’s are not supposed to be that good. I have got it down to 4 pairs of speakers – ‘Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom’, ‘Wharfedale Diamond 9.1′, ‘Cambridge Audio S30′, and ‘Mordant-short Avant 902i’. Which of these four speakers should I buy? And if you know of any other speakers in this price range (£100-£200) which are better please let me know.
Any help would be thoroughly appreciated. Thanks!!! :)

how to use old hi-fi speakers?

I have a LG mini hi fi system which got defunct but I have its 2 excellent speakers(with woofer and tweeter built in) with me. Now I want to use them to get the same quality sound as before. Is it possible, If yes, How? I even dont know that the speakers have built in amplifier or not.

buy a small stereo amplifier preferably 4w + 4w RMS and connect it with speakers.
Connect the amplifier to your PC or now a days FM Radio is also coming built in with such local stereo systems.

another question for you hi fi lovers out there.?

is there any hi -fi buffs out there that are using any of the Lavardin amplifiers in their system. if so how good are they. i keep reading these spectacular reviews but lavardin dealers are not that easy to find in the uk. especially in the north(manchester) how do these amps compare to a sugden a21a which i am currently using.

have you done a web search ‘Lavardin’?
and also, look in the ‘hifi world’ magazine, they should list a dealer/or manufacturers contact details
